Born into a family of strong hospitality and entrepreneur background, Adler Poh has cultivated a strong passion of serving people since a young age. His father works for the world-renowned Singapore Airlines, which places the highest emphasis on service culture. He taught young Adler the refinery of service etiquette and develop an astute eye for detail.

On the other hand, his mother is involved in a family-operated restaurant, located in Den Haag, Netherlands. Growing up with his entrepreneur minded maternal grandparents with sharp business minds, they have taught Adler the essential skills of having a keen eye for business and more importantly, the ethics of being a businessman. These has shaped his young mind and firmly established his passion and his calling to build a business of his own with the highest standards of hospitality and ethics, as taught and exemplified by his earliest mentors, his family.

However, road to success was not always smooth. Being a late bloomer, Adler faced difficulties in his academic studies. Being placed in the National Technical Stream did not daunt him; in fact, it spurred him to work even harder to ensure that he is not disadvantaged in other ways. He actively volunteered to plan for major school functions and managed to be the first and only deputy head prefect from the Normal Technical Stream. He took his private O levels and successfully placed himself in the course that he always wanted, Hospitality and Tourism Management in Temasek Polytechnic.

In Temasek Polytechnic, Adler devoured this opportunity and slowly shaped his crafts under the tutelage of the experienced veterans in the hospitality industry. He snatched at the chance to intern at Cathay Pacific Airways, one of the Top 5 airlines in the world, where he was exposed to crisis management, following the Bangkok Riots. During Adler’s stint at Cathay Pacific, he has successfully implemented new marketing campaigns to  promote Cathay’s 7 daily flights out of Singapore’ and many important Corporate Social Responsiblities (CRS) initiatives. The experience has strengthened and further enhanced his passion for hospitality, giving him a firm foundation to the business that he will open in future.

After graduation, Adler took a 1 month backpacking trip around Europe and realised that there was a gap for quality budget accommodation in Singapore. Bearing his father’s words in mind, he understands that service staff plays an important aspect to the overall experience.

Adler enlisted for the National Service, and clinched ‘Plantoon Best’ during Basic Miltary Training and then streamed to the Air Force as an Air Warfare Officer. Taking this opportunity to further enhance himself, Adler conceptualised and choreographed the Dynamic Defence Display (D3), earning him Air Defence Operations Command (ADOC), NSF of the year for 2011.

Fresh out of National Service, Adler is ready to put his plan into action. Equipped with the rich knowledge and experience that Adler has accumulated since young, Adler carefully curated every tiny detail of the hostel, ranging from the casual yet refined service culture, to the material of the bedsheets that were used. Critics were sceptical and condemned the oxymoron of a luxury hostel. However, armed with unwavering positive attitude and his never-ending passion to refine his crafts, Adler Hostel won respect and high compliments from its guests, termed affectionately as ‘Residents’. Local and international media also took notice of Adler Hostel and gave many accolades, putting Adler Hostel firmly on the world map.

Refusing to rest on his laurels and encouraged by the success of Adler Hostel, Adler further expanded Adler Hostel within a short span of three years. Being attuned to the ever-changing market demand, Adler introduced Istana Signature Cabins, the largest  of its class in Singapore for the couple and family segment and Ivory Signature Cabins, first of its kind in Singapore exclusively for two ladies.

Against all odds, Adler managed to garner success and achieve his young dream of achieving an ethically-sound and service-based business. Despite all, Adler remains hungry for more and hope to bring Adler Hostel to greater heights and introduce the Singapore based brand overseas. He continues to  prove his naysayers wrong that with hard work and right attitude, one will succeed eventually.
